Just a picture in a tweet...

But it has stuck with me all week.

The more I learn about the war in Syria, the more I despair at the lack of action from our political leaders.

But, this picture from UNHCR's twitter feed isn't about politics. It's about adults and children who left their homes in the Summer who are now horrifically unprepared for Winter.

So I know who I'm giving my Christmas donation to this year. UNHCR. They are on the ground helping people who are cold. People like the girl in the picture.

Much more than just a picture in a tweet.

The social media revolution

A totally brilliant video/animation packed full of stats and insights about social media trends and usage.

Updated for 2013.

And I don't even like Fat Boy Slim that much.

Forget blogging & MySpace... Twitter

This is hilarious. If you are a geek.

"Users no longer need a PC or blog, messaging can be typed by cell phone... "

Who'd a thought it!

2011 - my top 10 twitter peeps according to a machine!

TweetStats tells me that these people are the people I interact with most frequently on Twitter.

I've no idea how it works it out but it seems about right. As the 10 people listed above are some of my favourite Twitter people. With the exception of number 10, my brother, he's one of my favourite people, full stop.

They all use Twitter in the way that I like the most. They share, talk to and engage with people - none of them are stuck on broadcast, shamelessly self promoting. They are people who genuinely care about the fundraising sector and I would encourage you to follow them all - even my brother (who will delight you with tales of being a Dad to A & R and his wonderful wife K).

So why should you follow them?

@Skipinder; funny, Scottish and curator/creator of the best charity crowdsourced friday Spotify playlist ever, that's ever.

@LucyCaldicott; Lucy seems to be far too busy to spend anytime on Twitter. Once seen singing the 'da na na na' bit of Reflex with Simon le Bon. The next big thing in fundraising.

@Zoeamar; one of the nicest women in the third sector. She makes me laugh a lot and I plan to have coffee and cake with her in the new year.

@derekhumphries; the nicest man in fundraising, this man is a legend, plain and simple.

@ALO365; passionate about fundraising and another rising star.

@fiona_pattison; the cliche is that you should always hire people who are smarter than you. Fiona is the newest recruit to the mobile team at Open, she is smart, funny and a fellow Somersetshire ex-pat. What's not to like?

@margauxs; Canadian. Clever. Loves birds. Margaux is a name you will hear a lot, if you are serious about a career in fundraising.

@AlineReed; we once leant against the same wobbly bar to prop it up, something I hope to do again in 2012. Aline will write the next must read book on fundraising and retire to Birmingham where she will buy her favourite team and invite me to see the game every week. Probably.

@Loopy_Lisa_Lou; funny, feisty and sometimes flippant, (but in a very very good way). Lisa rocks plain and simple.

@Sadvillafan; is exactly what his twitter names suggests.

Lists are a bit odd though as they have to stop somewhere, there are plenty more brilliant people that I interact with on Twitter - have a flick through the list of people I follow, and take your pick, nearly all of them are lovely!

One last thing, Happy New Year.

QR Codes & NYC: two of my favourite things

Of course they will never catch on. But this is brilliant.

The video is very inspiring, QR Code being used as the way to deliver a fabulous idea rather than being the idea. And of course all backed up with fabulous content, optimised and delivered to a mobile phone. Just how we like it.

But of course they won't catch on!

Massive hat tip to Zoe Amar who shared the link via twitter. If you're on Twitter you should follow her. Zoe's link takes you to Tom Fishburne's blog, which is a treat in itself.

Careless tweets cost lives..

During the war the British government produced posters like this to encourage the public to be discrete when discussing information that may be useful to an enemy.

It seems we need something similar for the social media age. Here's the modern day equivalent.

It's fundamentally the same message but in an incredibly different context.

NFPtweetup is where it's at...

Last night I went to my second NFPtweetup and like the first one it was brilliant. I walked away with a real buzz of excitement for social media and how it can be used for campaigning and fundraising and to be totally honest, a feeling of pride that I’m a member of such a great community of people, (albeit a newbie!).

NFPtweetup is the idea of Rachel Beer, who with her fundraising agency Beautiful World organise this quarterly get together of like minded people. It’s a community of people who share a passion for the potential of digital and social media to change and update the way we campaign and fundraise.

The deal is that if you go with a friendly, co-operative and sharing attitude you can leave with lots of new ideas, a lot of inspiration and some new friends (real actual ones to supplement your online ones!).

It has to be the most important get together of non-profit sector people in the UK. This isn’t a place for the regurgitation of past success, the case studies presented are all very recent and in some cases still active. Crucially the whole emphasis of the discussion is what we can do next, not look at what we did ages ago.

The star of the show is the work, the ideas and the community. So it’s a format and ethos that really challenges the traditional fundraising conferences and seminars that we go to. This is an exciting step forward and for me mirrors the impact of social media in society by giving everyone in the room a voice, no sit down, turn off your mobile and listen to the person on stage go through 60 slides in 90 minutes at NFPtweetup!

Last night slides are here and if you want to review what was being discussed search for #nfptweetup on Twitter.

The next one is on the 16th February 2011. If you get the chance to go, make sure you do. I can promise that you will walk away with a big smile on your face and lots of ideas and enthusiasm for the day job.
